Deep Creek 2014 1-Year Countdown
Celebrate Deep Creek hosting the 2014 Canoe Slalom World Championships at our 1-year Countdown! On Tuesday, September 24 at 11 am at the Visitors Center in McHenry, music, refreshments, memorabilia from the 1989 Canoe Slalom World Championships hosted by Garrett County & participate in the official “drum roll” to the starting of the countdown clock, which will be on the roof of the Visitors Center. Media and the public are welcome to attend this ceremony which includes an unveiling of the official countdown clock for the September 2014 event.
During the 1 Year Countdown event, Deep Creek 2014, the event production company and host organization presenting the 2014 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships, will announce the official calendar of events and programming for the September 2014 World Championships and formally dedicate a display at the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center featuring memorabilia from the 1989 World Championships alongside members of the community that participated in that event 25 years ago. Local Garrett County high school bands will provide festive music to the celebration and participate in the official “drum roll” to the starting of the countdown clock, which will be on the roof of the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center. At the conclusion of the countdown event, Deep Creek 2014 will also show off a special promotional surprise.
The 2014 Canoe Slalom World Championships are September 16 – 21, 2014 to be held at Garrett County’s man-made mountaintop recirculating whitewater course, Adventure Sports Center International. The largest inbound sporting event to the United States in 2014, the 2014 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships will bring tremendous international focus on Maryland’s scenic western-most county with 300 athletes from over 40 international countries competing and over 21.5 million international broadcast television viewers around the world. Over 30,000 spectators are expected in Garrett County to watch the event with over $20 million dollars anticipated in regional economic impact. This is the second time America has hosted the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships and the second time Garrett County, Maryland has hosted the Championships after hosting them on the Savage River in 1989. The 2013 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships were held in Prague, Czech Republic, Deep Creek, MD hosts the 2014 World Championships and the 2015 Championships will be held in London, England.
