The Ruth Enlow Library will host a lecture on Gypsies – Their History and Culture, presented by Dr. Gerald Pops, professor emeritus of public administration at West Virginia University, where he taught from 1974 to 2010. Scheduled for Wednesday, August 9 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at the Oakland Library, this lecture is free and open to the public. To register for this event, contact Bonnie at 301-334-3996 x0117 or bonnie@relib.net.
“There are many myths and stereotypes about the Gypsies, or Roma, as they are frequently called,” noted Dr. Pops. “My presentation focuses on the evidence drawn from historians, linguists, and modern-day writers to paint a picture of how this multi-ethnic race of people, originating in India, evolved and moved. I will describe this group’s culture and beliefs, conflicts with non-Gypsy peoples, and problems and prospects in today's world.”
