Special Seminar on New Paid Leave Bill
Your Chamber, in partnership with Garrett College, Greater Oakland Business Association (GOBA) and the Greater Grantsville Business Association (GGBA), will host a special seminar to help employers understand how to implement the new “Earned Sick and Safe Leave (SSL)” law that went into effect February 11, 2018. The seminar will be Tuesday, March 13, 8:00-10:00 a.m. in Room 111 in the GiEC at Garrett College.
The featured speaker is Douglas W. Desmarais, an attorney with Smith & Downey, P.A., whose practice deals with all aspects of labor and employer/employee relations. He is deeply committed to helping employers comply fully with the many laws and regulations that govern the workplace. In Doug’s experience, full compliance not only protects employers from liability, it also results in the kind of workplace atmosphere that brings out the best performance in all employees.
The new paid sick leave law applies to all employers in the State of Maryland (including a unit of State or local government), regardless of size. Employers with 15 or more employees are now required to provide employees with paid leave for the reasons listed below, and employers with fewer than 15 employees are now required to provide unpaid leave for those same reasons.
